If you use a Fitbit with an iPhone, you can still get your steps into Walkingspree. Fitbit can't send data straight to our app on iOS, so we use Apple Health as the go-between. Your Fitbit syncs to the Google Health app, Google Health shares that data with Apple Health, and Walkingspree picks it up from Apple Health.
It sounds like a lot of moving parts, but you only have to set it up once. After that, everything updates on its own whenever your Fitbit syncs.
What you'll need
- An iPhone (the Apple Health app is already on it)
- The Google Health app, updated to version 5.05 or newer
- Your Fitbit paired with Google Health and syncing normally
- The Walkingspree app, signed in to your account
Before you start, it's a good idea to open Google Health and pull down on the screen to sync your Fitbit. That way there's recent data ready to come across.
Step 1: Turn on sharing between Google Health and Apple Health
This is what lets your Fitbit data land in Apple Health. You can set it up from either app, so use whichever you find easier.
From the Google Health app
- Open Google Health and tap Profile.
- Go to Partner apps and choose Apple Health.
- Turn sharing on.
- Your iPhone will ask what Google Health is allowed to write to Apple Health. Tap Turn On All, or at the very least make sure Steps, Distance, Active Energy, Workouts, Heart Rate and Sleep are switched on.
- Tap Allow.
From the Apple Health app
- Open the Health app and tap Sharing.
- Tap Apps, then Google Health.
- Pick the categories you want to share. Please include Steps, Distance, Active Energy, Workouts, Heart Rate and Sleep.
Want to check it's working? After your next Fitbit sync, open the Health app and tap Steps. You should see Google Health listed as one of the sources.
Step 2: Give Walkingspree access to Apple Health
Now Walkingspree needs your permission to read that data so it can add it to your account.
- Open the Walkingspree app and head to the screen where you connect a device.
- Choose Apple Health.
- Apple will show you a list of data types. Allow Walkingspree to read Steps, Distance, Active Energy, Workouts, Heart Rate and Sleep, then tap Allow.
Once you've connected, leave the app open for a minute or so to let the first upload finish.
If you accidentally left something switched off, no problem. Open the Health app, tap your profile picture, then Apps, find Walkingspree, and turn on whatever's missing.
Common questions
My steps aren't showing up in Walkingspree. What should I check?
Start at the beginning and work your way along. First, open Google Health, sync your Fitbit and make sure your steps are there. Next, open the Health app, tap Steps and confirm Google Health is listed as a source. Finally, open Walkingspree so it can pull in the new data. If the steps show up in one app but not the next, that's usually where the issue is.
I can't see Partner apps or Apple Health in Google Health.
You're most likely on an older version of the app. Update Google Health from the App Store (you'll need 5.05 or later) and try again.
My step count looks too high, like it's being doubled.
This can happen if your iPhone or an Apple Watch is also counting steps. In the Health app, tap Steps, then Data Sources & Access, and drag Google Health to the top of the list so it takes priority.
I turned off a permission by accident.
Just go back through Step 1 (for Google Health sharing) or Step 2 (for Walkingspree access). You can change these settings in the Health app any time.
