Got a Fitbit and an Android phone? Good news, getting your steps into Walkingspree is simple. Your Fitbit syncs with the Google Health app (you might still know it as the Fitbit app), Google Health passes your data to Health Connect, and Walkingspree picks it up from there.
You'll only need to set this up once. After that, your activity should come through on its own whenever your Fitbit syncs.
Before you begin
Here's what you'll need:
- An Android phone with Health Connect. Most newer phones have it built into Settings. If yours doesn't, you can grab it from the Google Play Store.
- The latest version of the Google Health app
- Your Fitbit paired with Google Health and syncing as usual
- The Walkingspree app, signed in to your account
Quick tip: open Google Health and sync your Fitbit before you start. That way there's recent data ready to go.
Step 1: Link Google Health to Health Connect
This step lets your Fitbit data flow into Health Connect.
- Open the Google Health app.
- Tap Connections (on some phones this shows up as a profile or connection icon in the corner), then tap Partner apps.
- Under Add connections, tap Sync your favorite health apps, and then tap Set up next to Health Connect.
- You'll see a short explanation of how the connection works. Give it a quick read and tap Accept.
- Choose which data you want to sync. Please make sure Steps is switched on, since that's what Walkingspree uses most. You're welcome to add sleep, workouts and anything else too. Tap Continue when you're done.
- Health Connect will then show the permissions Google Health is asking for. Have a look and tap Allow.
Once that's done, your Fitbit data will start showing up in Health Connect each time you sync.
Step 2: Let Walkingspree read your Health Connect data
Next, Walkingspree needs your OK to read that data and add it to your account.
- Open the Walkingspree app and go to the menu option.
- Tap on My device Option.
- Tap Health Connect.
- When Health Connect asks what Walkingspree can access, turn on Steps (plus anything else you'd like to share) and tap Allow.
It can take a minute or two for the first sync to finish, so hang tight.
Missed a permission? No worries. Open Health Connect (from your phone's Settings or the Health Connect app), go to App permissions, tap Walkingspree, and turn on whatever you skipped.
Common questions
My steps aren't showing in Walkingspree. What should I do?
The easiest way is to check each app in order. Start with Google Health: sync your Fitbit and make sure your steps are there. Then open Health Connect and check that Google Health is allowed to write your steps. Last, open Walkingspree so it can pull in the latest data. If your steps show up in one app but not the next, you've probably found the problem.
I can't find Partner apps or Health Connect in Google Health.
You might be on an older version of the app. Update Google Health from the Play Store and give it another try.
Health Connect isn't on my phone.
If you can't find it in Settings, download the Health Connect app from the Google Play Store and then start again from Step 1.
My step count seems too high.
This usually happens when more than one app on your phone is counting steps. In Health Connect, go to Data and access, tap Steps, and move Google Health to the top of the list so it takes priority.
I switched off a permission by mistake.
Easy fix. Just go back through Step 1 (for Google Health) or Step 2 (for Walkingspree). You can change these permissions in Health Connect whenever you need to.
